1. The Call of the Wild Palette: From the Bush to the Symbol
Why focus my acrylic painting almost exclusively on Australian birds? The answer lies in the fierce, untamed spirit they possess, a quality that resonates deeply with my interest in powerful Japanese symbolism. The intensity I seek to capture in an Australian subject, like the determination of the Willie Wagtail, is rooted in the same energy found in pieces like my Oni Mask painting.
My work is an exploration of that protective inner strength—whether it is the raw resilience of nature found in the Western Australian bush or the symbolic, confrontational power offered by traditional Japanese motifs like the Oni. These subjects demand a dynamic approach and challenge me to translate rapid movement, brilliant colours, and raw emotion into the static medium of acrylics.
2. Mastering Intensity in Acrylics: Technique and Detail
Acrylics are the perfect medium for capturing both the vibrant subtlety of a feather and the bold structure of a mask. Capturing this "fierce spirit" requires specific, deliberate techniques:
Building Iridescence and Colour: For my Australian birds (like the Scarlet Robin), the electric colours are achieved through a complex layering process. I build the plumage using multiple thin, transparent glazes of colour over a carefully placed dark base. This creates the luminosity and iridescence that makes feathers appear to shimmer, mimicking the effect of harsh Australian sunlight.
Contrasting Textures: The technique for the Oni Mask is different: it demands sharp lines and bold, textural impasto work to emphasize its structure and power. This contrast in technique—soft blending for birds versus sharp texture for the mask—demonstrates my versatile command of the acrylic medium.
The Power of Contrast: I use high contrast—vivid highlights next to deep, chromatic blacks—to make all my subjects stand out, whether they are masked figures or tiny birds, ensuring the viewer feels the intensity of the moment.
